Healthy Vision Starts Earlier Than You Think

Children as young as 2 years old can benefit from a comprehensive eye exam to help ensure their eyes are developing properly and their vision supports learning, play, and everyday life. For generations, Martin Eye Clinic has cared for families throughout Vinton by helping children build a strong foundation for lifelong eye health.

Regular Eye Exams Help Children Learn, Play, and Grow

Many children don't realize they're having trouble seeing because they assume everyone sees the way they do. Vision problems often develop gradually, making them difficult for parents and teachers to recognize right away.

A comprehensive eye exam helps us evaluate more than how clearly your child sees. We also look at how their eyes work together, how their vision is developing, and whether there are early signs of conditions that could affect learning, reading, sports, or everyday activities. Identifying concerns early gives your child the best opportunity to develop healthy vision as they grow.

Eye Exam Timing Changes as Your Child Grows

Children's eyes grow and change quickly, making regular eye exams an important part of their overall health.

  • Around age 2: We recommend a child's first comprehensive eye exam around age two unless concerns arise earlier.
  • School-age children and teens: Annual eye exams help monitor vision changes as they grow and support healthy learning and development.
  • Children with vision concerns or existing eye conditions: Some children may need to be seen more frequently. We'll recommend a schedule appropriate to your child's vision and eye health.

Even if your child passes a school vision screening, it's still important to schedule a comprehensive eye exam. School screenings are helpful, but they typically check only a portion of your child's vision and cannot evaluate overall eye health or detect many common eye conditions.

Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Exam

Children don't always tell you when something is wrong with their vision. Scheduling a comprehensive eye exam is a good idea if you've noticed your child:

  • Squinting to see clearly
  • Holding books or screens very close
  • Complaining of frequent headaches
  • Rubbing their eyes often
  • Sitting unusually close to the television
  • Struggling with reading or schoolwork
  • Losing their place while reading
  • Covering one eye
  • Showing an eye that turns inward or outward
  • Having difficulty seeing the board at school
  • Failing a school vision screening

If something doesn't seem quite right, it's always worth having their eyes checked.NONKE
